Dataset for "Behavior change interventions to promote adoption of e-bike shared mobility in a rural area: evidence from a mixed-method field trial"
This dataset contains a pre- and post-intervention survey on participants' uptake of active travel. The survey includes questions on
1. participants' perceptions of using active modes in general and e-bike shared mobility specifically;
2. their vehicle and bike ownership;
3. their travel behaviour by mode;
4. their views on climate change and traffic policies;
5. their sociodemographic characteristics;
6. their experience of taking part in the pilot (post-intervention survey only).
The dataset also contains the participants' weekly travel diary (4 weeks) which includes questions on their use of e-bike shared mobility that week – number of journeys, distance travelled, journey purpose, or barriers to using e-bike shared mobility

Intervention design: Two interventions were trialled to investigate their impact on the perceptions and travel behaviours of residents and Council employees: 1. Free credits to use Beryl bikes for one month. This intervention removed cost as an initial barrier and gave people direct experience of using shared e-bikes on a trial basis. 2. The ‘Pen portraits’ visioning tool (Prosser et al., 2022), adapted for the Cornish context. This tool presented stories of six evidence-based characters who have successfully reduced their car use and the study participants selected the character they most identify with. The intervention encouraged people to consider how they could reduce car use in their daily lives and highlighted potential co-benefits and positive lifestyle outcomes. A 2 x 2 factorial design was used, whereby residents (n = 200) were randomly allocated to one of four interventions groups: A) a control group; B) the visioning tool only; C) Beryl bike credits only; and D) Beryl bike credits plus the visioning tool. Council staff participants (n=27) were not allocated to an intervention group. Sampling: Participants (residents n=151; Council staff n =14, who completed all data collection activities) are adults who live, work or study in the six towns where Beryl Bikes were available: Truro, Falmouth, Penryn, Newquay, St Austell or Penzance. Data collection: Perceptions were measured in a pre- and post-intervention survey. Journey frequency, distance, and mode were measured in a weekly travel diary (4 weeks).
Data processing and preparation activities:
The survey and travel diary data was anonymised prior to analysis and publication.
